Back to life, back to reality

Okay, I think I've gotten over the shock!  Today was my first day back at work since December 21st...ugh!  Having had limited contact with the outside world for the last 16 days made today somewhat of a challenge:

Challenge #1:  I watched almost 3 seasons of How I Met Your Mother while I was on vacation so for those of you who are also fans of HIMYM, I seem to have taken on Barney’s persona (Barney is played by Neil Patrick Harris). Barney says stuff like “wait for it!" before saying something insulting, smart or witty, and he says “legen – {pause} - dary” when referring to a good time, and when he wants to go out, he says to a friend “suit up!”, and when he says something funny, smart or witty, he automatically raises his hand for a high five. So imagine how I looked at work today, trying to high five my colleagues when I came up with a good idea (or they did)?  Or in a meeting, when I had something important (and intelligent!) to say, I would premise it with “wait for it!” and a slight pause? Now I can’t wait for my BFF to get home tomorrow night so I can get high fives from her when I say something cute or funny or so I can say “I have something planned for us tonight and it’s going to be, wait for it, legen - - - - dary!”. Good times :)

Challenge #2: I have been blogging for the last 10 days so I often found myself thinking "I could blog about that!" including topics ranging from bad drivers, to gridlock traffic, to sidewalk hoggers, to almost falling on my butt while crossing the street, to the beauty of a snowflake (say it with me...ahhhh!).

Challenge #3: I have spent almost 70% of my vacation in pyjamas (seriously!) so I probably don’t have to elaborate on the challenge that has had on my first day back at work. Thankfully, my colleagues didn’t mind seeing me in my pyjamas :)

Challenge #4: I almost forgot about what I needed to do to prepare for work: remembering to set my alarm, making sure I had clean clothes for work, laptop, workbag, lunch, snack, note for Sarah, check that stove is off, make sure lights are off (energy efficient!), gloves, hat, purse, iPhone, Blackberry, Bluetooth, make sure there's gas in the car, check that cats have food and water, and make sure doors are locked. It’s a good thing I started preparing for my return to work on Tuesday! Don’t worry...the cats have not been without water and food nor have the lights been off since Tuesday :)

Challenge #5:  Withdrawal...I missed my couch and television :(

Challenge #6:  Trying to take a nap in the afternoon without anyone noticing!

Honestly though, there were just as many positives:

Positive #1: I love my job!

Positive #2: I got to see my colleagues, people I truly care about, respect and admire.

Positive #3: I was able to feel like a contributing member of society (again!).

Positive #4, #5 and #6: Venti soy chai lattes from Starbucks...need I say more?

Some of you may be wondering why I went back to work on Friday. Why not just take the extra day off and start on Monday, you ask? Well, I needed today to get back in the swing of things. Monday would have been absolutely horrible trying to get ready for work while making sure Sarah had everything she needed for her first day back at school. But the truly great thing about going back to work today is that I’m back at work for one day and it's already the weekend :)
