Am I dreaming?

Today, on my last day of vacation, I concocted a new juice and sat down to eat my breakfast of champions (juice + hard-boiled egg + almonds + banana) but I couldn’t help but wonder: am I awake or am I dreaming? That’s right...I watched Inception last night! I highly recommend that everyone see this film and while I’m at it, I also highly recommend that everyone get a juicer...yum! Okay, so last night, I was left with too many questions to ponder before bed but now that I’ve had a good night sleep and am filling my body with nutriyum (self-defined as food and drink that are both nutritious and yummy), it’s time to analyse the movie.

So the most obvious question is: did the top stop spinning? Well, I had my own innately rational opinion (yes!) but decided to do a quick Google search and discovered that the answer lies in your ability to listen after the screen goes black at the end of the movie. Well isn't that lovely! I’ve already returned the DVD rental so it’s not like I can confirm that now but based on everything that I’ve read online about the movie (and obviously missed!), I’m going to have to rent the DVD again.

If you haven’t already seen the movie, I apologize if I’m revealing too much but really, what are you waiting for???  Here are a few other things that I’ll have to scrutinize the next time I see the movie (it may be later today!):
  • When does Cobb wear his wedding ring (reality vs dream)?
  • What are his children wearing (particularly the shoes)?
  • What do I hear at the end of the movie when the screen goes black? (this one was worth repeating!).

It's incredible how many people online have overanalysed written about the movie particularly about the structure, rules and order of the dreams (chaotic and non-linear?). For you first-timers, I don’t recommend that you pay attention to these minute details because it may take away from your enjoyment of seeing the movie for the first time! But seriously, what are you waiting for?

As I sit here, I can’t help but wonder if I’m still in a dream. Have you ever had those really vivid dreams when you wake up and wonder if it really happened? I tend to have those dreams about John Cusack :)

Unfortunately (or fortunately?), I’m one of those people who rarely remember my dreams. According to Freud, the reason you struggle to remember your dreams is because the superego is at work. It is doing its job by protecting the conscious mind from the disturbing images and desires conjured by the unconscious. What was I thinking? Why did I turn to Freud for this blog post? Disturbing images and desires...really Freud??? I’d like to think of dreams as something positive that doesn’t need to be psychoanalysed! So I dream of John Cusack...of sitting by the ocean...of ice cream...of Angelina Jolie...of doing fun things with friends and family...of being at work....of falling (but I never land!)....of being stuck underwater. Okay, maybe those last two aren’t so positive but seriously though, I think we take dreaming way too seriously! Why do dreams have to be psychoanalysed? Aren’t we judged enough in reality...why do our dreams have to be subjected to such harsh judgments? Okay, I digress :)

Back to the movie...I wonder if Christopher Nolan came up with the brilliant idea for Inception in his dreams. It’s a fascinating concept and visually stunning (zero gravity...really???) but I think I’ll refrain from psychoanalysing the movie. I enjoyed all 2 hours and 28 minutes of the movie which is, according to Cobb, about 30 hours in dream time :)

Now I'm off to enjoy my last day of freedom vacation but first, here's my dreamy juice of the day:

1 inch of gingerroot
1 lemon (peeled)
1 red apple
1 celery stalk
Parsley
Alfalfa sprouts
1 large carrot
A small chunk of watermelon

Have a great day!!!
